Cutting into, excavating prototype




For this prototype I saw a really cool girl in my studio group use a connection which revolves around the idea of creating "arrow" like pins. This means one side would not slip out of its side hole as it had something to grip on like a hook.

The Inspiration of this idea was kept from the original paper model of slicing off one side, but inside of just closing it up I wanted to explore the possibilities of cutting and excavating the insides of the shape and creating something else. 

Cutting down the shape created quite an interesting piece of functionality as it almost created side barriers and a back barrier for the user. I was not trying to create it into a chair but that's what it fell into and ended up looking quite like one.

Joints Original sketches for potential joints Joint 1: Slotting This joint derives from the technique of interweaving two pieces of cardboard that slot into each other. There are two slots in each cardboard which if measured correctly would connect on top of each other and have a flush finish. Accuracy of measurement was crucial here for a finessed finish and also getting the right tab size effected how easily it would slot into the gap without it ruining the integrety of the cardboard material (bending or folding). That was a diffuculty with creating the model. As for the actual joint, i tried using an "x" shape first and it was strong only in the middle because there was only one point of intersection but the sides were flappy and weak and would have needed more support. Exhibition day!

EXHIBITION DAY Good points: Structure was strong and durable, could hold Kevin and others without any stress. It was comfortable and Tane said it was amazing craftsmanship.  Critique: Spatial verb could have been shown a little more as shearing means to be asymmetrical.

Scaling up and refining

Scaling up Refinement and Scaled up version of prototype 5 to outline key problems and give a better perspective This prototype brings into effect the shear amount of structure I will need to put into my design for it to hold up effectively. The side bits are very thin and not strong. You can see how weak the top of the slider is. Next time I will have to figure out where that will stop in order to make it really strong to be able to hold up a person. The amount of stress and force put onto that slider will force it to come off as shown in the next photo. Reinforcing on a horizontal was not such a good idea as it is very weak. The way to overcome this issue is to look back at my previous joinery such as the crossing one and figure out that it needs to be on a vertical line in order for it to be really strong and have structural integrity for not only me.
